I find it interesting that we'd rather discuss KB-sizes of bitmap
images rather than the elephant in the room -- i.e., moving to SVG.
(The percentage of institution logos that still are available in PNG
format is already small and constantly shrinking. It's now common
people have to do custom work if we ask them for a PNG logo.)

Do we need an amendment of the MDUI spec before we start
allowing/promoting/demanding SVG logos at scale?

Anyway, to the literal question at hand:

Those are reasonable upper limits, IMO, for the sizes we'd maximally
allow ourselfs, cf. our locally registered logos:
https://eduid.at/entities/sp/logos
https://eduid.at/entities/idp/logos
and recommendation
"between 80 and 250 pixels in size (either dimension)."
at https://wiki.univie.ac.at/display/federation/Joining

None of our logos are embedded inline, of course.

Most of the same benefits from inline logos (stable image URLs == less
log breakage; few privacy issues by loading all logos from a central
URL where access/logs are not evaluated) can be achieved by the fed op
hosting the logos itself -- something I've been avoiding but have
recently started doing (in cases where no good URL could be found).
