If I understand this correctly, the only current browser with partial
issues seems to be IE11. But assuming one does not use animations and
has height/weight properties (which is by definition available in
metadata) one should be fine. So, this looks not too bad I think.

The XML is base-64 encodes. So the image tag contains something like
src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PD94bWwgdmVy..."
