InCommon are clearly filtering out a handful of IdPs....but I assume for
very good reasons.  Someone may take this to mean that not all the

Why is the eduGAIN map misleading?

It shows which identity federations are already or soon participating in
eduGAIN. However, this map does not really make a statement about how
many of a federation's entity are already connected to eduGAIN. This is
because for many federations, only a subset of their entities have
opted-in to eduGAIN. So, if a country or federation is green, it doesn't
necessarily mean that for example all of its universities are connected
to eduGAIN.


Will the "real" eduGAIN coverage please stand up

If you are interested in the *real eduGAIN coverage* of a federation,
you might want to have a look at the isFederated Check Service that
recently was extended by a feature to also show the coverage (how many
IdPs of that federation are also in eduGAIN).

The direct link to that page is:

The eduGAIN coverage is of course also available via the REST/JSON API.

The feature to show the eduGAIN coverage is new and it is not be 100%
accurate for all federations, still it's certainly more accurate than
the eduGAIN map alone when it comes to judge how many organisations -
and their users - of a federation are eduGAIN-ready and can actually
participate in eduGAIN.

Bug reports, suggestions and feedback are still welcome.


And what is the isFederated Check again doing?
----------------------------------------------
The main purpose of the eduGAIN isFederated Check Service (EIFCS) is to
answer the question "how many organisations represented by these email
addresses/domain names are already federated and in eduGAIN". Basically,
the EIFCS checks if a domain name shows up in metadata of one of the
(self-asserted) production federations worldwide as well as in eduGAIN.
The EIFCS is a great tool to quickly determine how many users for
example of a research community, have federated and eduGAIN-enabled
accounts.

The EIFCS was originally on wiki.edugain.org but was recently moved to
technical.edugain.org thanks to the eduGAIN OT.
