i'll try to dd the flash from onie to a big enough external usb hdd or
something....

let's postpone the together hacking to tomorrow afternoon when you see fit?

Ok. Maybe the box @CERN will also be ready by then.

then a debian install to partition #2 keeping the onie in place

ONIE is on partition 2 (partition 1 is the EFI system
partition). Don't overwrite it :)

thanks for noticing, i'll study that carefully and screenshot to album.nop.hu
when im there... :)

and finally no worries, i'll dd the ssd before doing anything destructive
anyway to be able to restore anytime, as i did to my bf2556....

(also you'll find the disk image at my nas at
files.nop.[hu|dn42]/inet/barefoot/ )

I'd expect that only partitions 1 and 2 exist on a new device and they
can always be restored with a fresh "ONIE embed".

then creating the 3rd partition for the rare installation and

here comes you to help me hand-extract the below .bin to that 3rd,

much like we did to my bf2556 together about a year or two ago....

hmmm?

I'd prefer if you could simply use the ONIE installer directly. You
can always overwrite that with your debian installation if you want
to.

so the thing is that normally i do run nix yess but sometimes when i cannot
wait for a whole reoptimize-recompile cycle,

i would reserve the possibility to boot my regular debian and do on-box
development within 1-2 minutes for the new tofino.bin :)

afterwards i surely fetch your builds when im done, but you know
trial-and-fail development all the way here :)))

I understand. But this testing will also involve multiple ONIE
re-installs to get everything right. I would suggest to make the
dual-boot setup only once the BSP is fully supported, if that's ok :)
