Do you think that `clean-import.xsl` can work on our outdated MDA

I'd really prefer not to speculate on a version that old. You should migrate to the current version (0.9.2) as soon as you can. Of course, I'm hoping that won't be the current version for too much longer and there will be some disruption when 0.10 comes out, but I would not recommend waiting for that.

Java 7 and Java 8 should be indistinguishable for versions up to and including 0.9.2. Version 0.10 will require Java 11, same as IdP v4.

The current `clean-import.xsl` transform just uses the endorsed Xalan and the associated extension library to wrap X.509 certificates. If you remove that template, and the associated namespace definition, you should be fine without an endorsed Xalan.

The endorsement mechanism isn't supported in Java 11, and therefore won't be available in MDA 0.10. We'll have other ways of doing the things that required those features (this is, literally, what I am working on just now).
