maybe use the web server logs to check the user agents to see usage of
the platform?

whilst the institutions are hopefully on top of Windows releases and
managed desktop platform etc migrated to Win10
unless they have a very robust access policy (with client checks etc)
its likely that students will be using Win7 for a
much longer time on their network - alongside those machines for
special purposes/hardware that still run WinXP I see
Win7 junk lying around for years to come. as thats reality rather than
the perfect word we'd like to live in.
