Great question.


The recommended mechanism right now would be to use the device-specific
redirect URLs indeed. It gives you the opportunity add an educational
element - you can actively tell users why it is bad to be on Windows 7
from now on. If the button simply doesn't exist any more, this merely
gives rise to helpdesk and mailing list questions "What about Windows 7"
(we had those for XP back in the day).


For completeness' sake: there is a possibility to remove the button
site-wide for end users, but still allow admins to download the
installers themselves, and place a device-specific redirect.


But since this affects every single CAT admin - who then need to take
manual action to download the installer, put it on a local web page, and
redirect to it - this is a rather intrusive step. It's certainly worth
considering to do that, but not as a day one option. We would definitely
want to pre-announce such a step with a long-ish lead time for admins to
be able to prepare. Shot from the hip, I'd say that mid-term of the ESU
program (Jul 2021) might be a good date.
