We’ve gotten reports that Siri isn’t working from iOS devices associated
with eduroam at our institution. We’re not aware of anything else not
working – certainly general Internet access from any browser is fine
from devices on which we can replicate the Siri problem. Delving into
it, this only affects clients that have used the CAT tool to configure
the SSID. Removing the profile and manually joining leads to Siri
working just fine. Looking at the profile in more detail, when I
override the HTTP proxy setting from “Automatic” to “Off”, Siri works
fine with the profile installed.

 

I’m assuming that the default setting of “Automatic” works fine for
other institutions, which leads me to believe that something in our
environment is causing the automatic detection to fail (though just for
Siri). Our CAT profiles for OS X also configure automatic proxy
detection, and Siri works fine from such laptops. We do not have an HTTP
proxy in our environment (it’s not just that we don’t require its use,
we do not operate one). I’ve confirmed that we do not send any DHCP
options for WPAD. I’ve also confirmed we do not have any sub-domains in
our DNS that conform to the names that the WPAD spec says it would check.

 

Does anyone have any pointers on what to look for in our environment?
Alternatively, is it possible to set the HTTP proxy setting to “Off”
instead of “Auto”? I’ve looked around the admin portal, but all I can
see is how to set it to a specific value.
