Hi,
I am redoing parts of the GUI to handle problems you reported. I do not want to repeat the false start I did before so I am checking things before making them public, but I will send them out  Monday the latest.

Hi Tomasz,

Just had another look after some of the changes being discussed in the list, have the same footer issues as before unfortunately.

I agree on making the search more obvious to the user (double the size of the current box so it becomes more prominent?) and auto-prompting to use Geolocation (if this is possible?)

The IP detection seems very random to say the least, right now my organisation comes time but gets listed as 26km away and other times a University in Scotland gets put to the top instead (!)

The search list that we are using is an external package and is probably the only element that we hardly touch. Probably it may require an upgrade, but I definitely cannot start messing with it now. I know that the IP geolocation is rather low grade, still on Android phones when people are using the dedicated app, the geolocation comes for free and we do not need to rely on IP.

If the Geolocation isn’t enabled initially an alphabetical list is arguably more user-friendly as at least the user knows roughly where to scroll. In the IP detection mode our organisation could be anywhere in there, which is quite frustrating to navigate.

This is an important message and we will think of how to make things better and we may ask you for help in some tests, but we need to roll out the stuff now so messing with this element would be risky.

As a separate feedback the Android profile installation process needs to have a larger focus on downloading the eduroamCAT application. In fact is it not better just to point straight to it rather than the profile as once the app is installed you can do the whole installation process from there?

Definitely a good point, again probably not much we can do at this point but if you want to halp your users and hate the way that CAT handles things, you can use device-specific options and either add a popup message to the CAT interface so before users download the profile they will get this message or even stronger you may make this device redirected to your own page where you will instruct users what to do.

Yours
Tomasz

Gerrard

Hi Tomasz,

Some quick testing on the devices I had available...

iOS 12.1 beta 1, iPhone SE

Footer is immobile, doesn't allow scrolling. It is also huge taking up half of the screen!

Can't actually select the institution installer, as the remaining page is too small to allow scrolling.

The previous pages were all fine however, to get to this point, although I would make the institution search more prominent, as IP detection is terrible in my experience.

Samsung Oreo 8.0 on a S9+

Looks and works fine in all respects.

It is a much bigger screen than the iPhone though!

HI,

I have made some changes to the GUI to fix problems with the footer layout. It would be great if people could do some testing. The changes are available as an alternative CAT skin. You can use it by calling https://cat-test.eduroam.org/beta/?skin=modern1

Once you do that you will get a cookie set and this skin will be used even without setting it explicitly. You can return to the default skin by https://cat-test.eduroam.org/beta/?skin=modern

Hi Gerrard,
thanks for you observations. Somehow playing with different windows sizes and testing on real devices I never hit this terrible layout problem, but now I managed to reproduce it without an effort.
The Digital signature info - we think this should stay. We make a very strong point about eduroam safety and having safe installers is one of the crucial elements. I think that digital signature will sound to people as something important even if they do not quite get what that means.

The two clickable elements doing the same thing - they are an overkill indeed. It is more of a space filler for larger screens I will try to hide one of the elements when there is too little space.
The footer, of course is a problem on small screens ...
Thanks again
Tomasz

Hi all,

Just joined the list after being advised it’s the best place for providing feedback on the (much improved) new interface being tested for CAT.

We’ve just launched eduroam at our organisation but currently looking at the CAT beta to make screenshots for users ready for the full launch. Trying it on my Android phone (OnePlus 6) noticed a few UI tweaks that could do with improvement. Screenshot attached for reference.

1)      The download button is partially covered by the footer 2)      The download button looks a bit too far down the page to be the obvious control to click on, if anything it seems “Connect your device to eduroam” which granted does do the same thing. Having two clickable elements doing the same function seems a bit superfluous? 3)      The blue section underneath the image banner is a bit too large when viewed on a smartphone and pushes the download button out the way, can it be reduced? 4)      The introduction text “Custom built for your organisation \ Digitally signed by the organisation that coordinates eduroam®: GÉANT Association” doesn’t really mean much to the end user whereas the phrase beneath “Connect your device to eduroam” is much clearer. Perhaps consider swapping that text into the banner, which would free up space for the download button to be more prominent?

As I say more tweaks than anything and it’s leaps and bounds ahead of the current CAT interface, which I’ve had a few users tell me looks like malware (!)
