Hi Shane,
CAT has installed eduroam on thousands of instances and this is the first ever report of such a behaviour. There is a registry check run by CAT at the beginning, this is to check if Symatec protection is on, as this is known to interfere with installation of profiles on 64 bit systems (probably a bug, most likely to go away in the next release). One could imagine that some protection software dislikes the registry access from the installer. Still this is bad news that this happens and we have no clue what this might be.

Hi Tomasz

I asked the user having the issue (he’s in our department) to run it from the command line and he indicated that the debug file was not created.  He did run process monitor and this was what he said:

“Process Monitor captured some interesting results when I ran the installation from the command line.  It looks like a process involving a check of the registry goes into a loop.  Interesting that it has to do with cryptography/certificates.”

We were able to get the installation to work on this laptop by rebooting into ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ and then running the installation.  So there is obviously something running in Windows that is interfering with the CAT tool installation.  As we roll this out to our general user population I am trying to see if there are any likely problems users may run into and any solutions we can possibly provide them.  If there were any programs known to cause issues with the CAT tool it would be good to know about them in advance.

It may be a case where we advise them to reboot into ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ if necessary.  In the worst case we may have to provide information for users to manually configure their eduroam network connection.

Thanks,

Shane

Could you please run the exe from the command line with the -debug=4 option.
This will produce a log file in your TMP directory (CAT should show you where it is located).
Please mail me this log file.

Hi,

I work for the University of the Fraser Valley and am the administrator responsible for our eduroam deployment using the CAT tool.  We are in the process of going live and have been testing the CAT tool and have mostly had success with it.

We have had one instance so far in our testing of a Windows 7 laptop user where the CAT installation appears to hang.  On this laptop when we download the CAT tool and launch the .EXE we do not get the ‘Welcome to the eduroam installer’ window, nothing appears to happen.  If we look in the task list we can see the process in the task list and it will stay there until we restart or kill the process.

Do you have any troubleshooting information or list of any potential causes for this behavior on a Windows 7 system?

Thanks
