Of you go to the entities database, you will be able to see a list of
entity categories. Most of them are just listed as identifiers, the are
added automatically once they appear in some entity.

If you are interested in a particular entity category then you can
select it and get a full list. This will tell you the number of
federations, but getting a list of federation names is not going to be
very easy.

It is also possible to download the whole database output as CSV, which
is tab not comma separated. This will have one column called entity_cat
and inside there is a semicolon separated list of out local identier for
the categories (for each role descriptor). I can provide the mapping
between these numbers and actual entity category URIs. Therefore if one
want to play with data in this way, the information is there.

Of course it is way easier to start with the DB itself, so we will dig
out this info and make it available in the federation details view and
the show_federation API call. This will not be done right away though,
but if you are not in a lot of hurry then it will be done.
