Ah, after a quick Portuguese crash course online I now understand:

the app tells you that a screen lock is *required* for it to function
correctly. So if you don't have one, then that is the problem you need
to solve.

At least a swipe lock needs to be setup on the phone. Note that this is
not an application requirement, but by the Operating System (Android)
itself - Android doesn't let anyone install the relevant settings if no
screen lock is set up.
