Excellent spot! I'm not sure it is the issue, but we do provide a wpad entry 
for our campus clients (soon to be removed) and I wonder if the wireless 
clients are somehow getting this resolved.

yep - if nothing is provided by DHCP (a null entry is best practice) and 
nothing provides a wpad result (once again, your own infrastructure, so best 
practice is to have a wpad.$domain host that returns 'DIRECT'
so as to ensure hosts dont go up the DNS root to get a result from elsewhere 
- then its something else.
