The problem with no longer supporting iOS 5 is the iPad 1 can’t run anything newer, it’s stuck on iOS 5.  The only option would be to manually configure the device for eduroam, rather than using the CAT tool.

Hi again,

The eduroam software available at https://cat.eduroam.org/?idp=323

fails to install on an ipad 1 with iOS 5.1.1

with the following message : Safari was unable to install a profil because of an unknown error.

We are not aware of contents of our mobileconfig profiles which would not be supported in iOS 5. There is a leap in supported features according to Apple specs of "iOS 5 and above" and "iOS 7 and above" though. Your profiles do not use Hotspot 2.0/Passpoint (which is a iOS 7+ feature), so I'm a bit at a loss what the problem could be. The "unknown error" also isn't exactly helpful.

Does the same profile install okay on iOS 6 and above devices?

Did a CAT 1.0 generated profile install okay on this iOS 5.1.1 device?

On closer look, I have a suspicion. Our new friend "Proxy Auto Detection" is supported in iOS 5, but the extension " ProxyPACFallbackAllowed" which we ship has availability iOS 7 and later.

Prof. Malti, would you be willing to accept an emailed (and unsigned) mobileconfig from me which has the suspect functionality disabled?

It might take until next week until I find the time to actually craft the modified file. If this turns out to be the problematic feature, we'll have to see if we splice off a separate download button "iOS 5" or maybe declare iOS 5 support discontinued. I would feel bad about the latter, iOS 5.1.1 is from 2012 and there may still be many such devices out there.

Greetings,

Stefan Winter
