Really? I'm using the newest Apple Configurator app to generate
mobileconfig profiles from, and it specifically has a "Wi-Fi" tab - not
a generic network one. And on that one, SSID is mandatory.

Can you send me an example of a mobileconfig file doing that? And if
possible, with a URL stapled next to it which explains where one would
get the corresponding information from? I'm looking at

which supports OS X and iOS, but again only has Wi-Fi specific keys...
