True, it's not a perfect solution and errors could be hidden behind such
types of authentication. Same goes for X.509 authentication. But IMHO
still better than nothing and I would guess that a large majority of
IdPs uses web form based authentication.

We had some IdPs that used Basic Auth in the past, with the AAI service
becoming more and more popular they eventually all moved to web form
based logins for various reasons.
