You can run the installer with the -DEBUG=4 option to see what it is trying to do.

It runs a small utility which checks if wireless is enabled. If it is not then the installer reports the error and exits. It does not access the device driver, it just checks if there are any wireless devices available.

I still cannot understand what is your goal here. eduroam is primarily the wireless service. It can also be used on wired networks, but your University did not set this option, so clearly it is not needed.

If you say that your wireless driver is causing you problems, why install eduroam at all? Or is it that you say that the driver only started causing problems after CAT run? Knowing what the installer does, I just cannot believe that CAT could be the cause.

CAT installer DOES NOT install any drivers on your computer. It just creates an XML wireless profile file and installs this by calling Windows utility netsh.

It also may install certificates necessary to properly authenticate your home server, but in your case, I see that the university is using well-known root CAs, therefore they are already in the system and there is no need to install them.

Yes you are misunderstanding me, I have access to a LAN connection and when executing the .exe file with the wifi driver disabled (located in device manager - network adapters) it will fail to install as mentioned in your second point:´Windows wireless configuration service is disabled, the installer will not run`.  Which leads me to believe that the .exe file accesses the network adapter as I now have an issue with the network adapter (in my laptop) after running the .exe, which causes the network adapter to stop functioning randomly, even when not connected to eduroam wifi.

Perhaps I misunderstand something.

If you disable WiFi on your laptop, the CAT installer will fail. It is meant to install eduroam over WiFi so clearly it needs that. Also if the Windows wireless configuration service is disabled, the installer will not run.

From what you say it seems to appear the if you enable the wireless device driver then it causes unstable behaviour of the system, but if so then it would be the problem of the device and nothing else.

Hi Tomasz,
I am operating windows 11. The executable file needed to use Eduroam, "eduroam-W10-UoB-EduROAM AT UniBE.exe", needs access to a wireless network adapter in your computer to run. For example, if you try running the executable file with your wifi driver disabled, it fails to run. This is the exact driver that is now causing me an issue and windows fails to open on bootup and also disables on random occasions.

Hi,

could you tell what operating system are you using?

CAT installers create network profiles for eduroam. This is a one-time action. The applications does not install itself, it just runs, creates the profiles and exits. It is not being run again unless you start it yourself.

You can remove installed eduroam profiles - which is normally the equivalent of "forget network" .

I would find it highly unlikely that the existence of the eduroam profile on your laptop could any way interfere with other networks.

Cheers

Hello,
I downloaded CAT for use eduroam in my institution on my personal laptop, but ever since downloading it, my Network Adapter on my laptop has been malfunctioning. The Wi-Fi on my laptop no longer works and the driver associated with Wi-Fi on my device cannot start. Just wondering why this happened and if there is a fix/way to remove this Cat installation from my computer.
Sincerely, James
