Hi Dean,

The question has been asked of me "Can you use the CAT tool to onboard to a wired
802.1x network?"... I'm guessing, no? It seems a very eduroam focused tool to me.
yes, it can ;-) You activate wired in the Media Properties of a profile.
After this, e.g. a .mobileconfig for Apple devices will contain a <wired>
section,
we have been doing this from the start.
But beware: Wired 802.1X is so poorly supported by most manufacturers
that it's a pain to actually use nowadays, at least for BYOD.
Windows: Since Windows 10 1904, the password is never saved at config time
Since Windows derives the realm from the user's input, you users MUST
type the long username including realm (if required).
macOS: If you try to install a profile containing said wired section on a
MacBook that
has never seen a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, you will end up with an error
message.
ChromeOS: ChromeOS has ignored its own specs for the .ONC file for years.
Meanwhile, most things work again, but wired does not. (It did, I _once_
succeeded
in hooking up a student's ChromeBook to our wired 802.1X network in the dorm.)
iOS: iOS/iPadOS has a little-known wired ethernet support,
but this does not support 802.1X. At least, it will simply ignore a
wired section in a .mobileconfig profile.
Good luck
Martin
