The UserAPI has the deviceInfo method, which indeed returns a text/html
fragment. There is also a profileAttributes method, which returns
application/json, and the payload contains some html (jsonpath:
$.devices[*].message and $.devices[*].options.message). I guess both are
acceptable, for an XHR response, but I am not thrilled about also embedding
javascript in an API response. Maybe you could use a multi-frame (GIF) image
or a video element, if necessary. How such assets should be linked upon DOM
injection is a different story.
After trying this on 12.2, however, I find the prompts to be quite
straight-forward, except for the implicit 8 minute "timeout"; yet the
placement of the downloaded profile at the top of the main settings menu and
the distinction between downloaded and installed profiles do hint that what
you are seeing is only temporary. Therefore an amendment of the text returned
by deviceInfo to hint about the former and specifically about the timeout
would suffice, IMHO.

Z.
