Yes, they seem to mean "server name" and instead call the UI element
"Domain". A clear, intuitive and meaningful name would be too easy and
is not the Android way.

FWIW, we have always set the server name; the API we use in the app
allows for that since Android 4.3. It's only new that this setting
transpires to UI now (finally!). I don't immediately see why this would
have an effect in the app, but it certainly is also not impossible that
it does.
