Publishing in the Amazon app store offers the striking advantage that
we'll be able to support a new line of devices - Amazon Kindle comes
with Amazon app store as the only pre-installed store; which is markedly
different from F-Droid or Androidpit, which are nowhere installed by
default (or at least not that I know of, in significant numbers).

So we are now looking at the Amazon app store.

Having looked at things, I see that the situation is - of course - not
as simple as one might think. FireOS is a fork of Android but claims to
be API-compatible. So apps "should" just work on FireOS if they do on
Android.

However we are using some rather seldomly used and relatively new APIs
which your typical app doesn't care much about, and we are taking it to
its limits on stock Android. I wouldn't be suprised if the compatibility
promise stops at or before this point.

In any case, we are looking at FireOS 4 and 5 only - earlier versions
are based on Android equivalents of < 4.3, and don't have the required
API level anyway.

We'll publish on Amazon ASAP because that is also an app store for many
non-Kindle devices. It will then (technically) also be available for
Kindles immediately. But, in all seriousness, I wouldn't want to call
Kindle "supported" at this point in time, and would not want to announce
it wide-spread. Testing is definitely needed. So, people on this list
are welcome to test it but please don't push all your users to it yet.

If we get reports that the app troubles Kindles, we can pull it out of
the Amazon app store only for that kind of device, keeping it online for
the rest.

Greetings,

Stefan Winter
