Hi,
I followed tightly this hackathon for the last few days and on behalf of the RARE Team and GÉANT
I would like to heartedly/warmly thank you for all of these features. These last days were stellar !
There is a saying in French « J’ai tirer la pellote de laine » and then not sure how or why but this leads you
Hack all these great encapsulation feature was truly unexpected.
Cherry on the cake:
- it matches all the RARE project roles/use cases I presented during Jisc NGN VC.
- And all builds are automated
- auto-upgrade works in such way it is automatically delivered at (my) home router (in case of SOHO//CPE)

For those :
* Who have a bit of spare time … ( I’ve ground up boys … :-) )
* Who have the need to internetwork their home devices
* who would like to have more control at their home and are frustrated by the ISP broadband device limitation
I strongly recommend you to take a look at this article series: https://wiki.geant.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=148090404
More articles will follow ...
As a side in NREN context, if you think about implementing your own CPE, this is a _TRULY_ versatile platform
Thanks again Csaba !
All the best,
Frederic
À bientôt,

hi,
attaching you the newest test runs with dpdk, bmv2 and bfswd...
news is packet over udp which is not a too well known protocol,
but here is my rationale about it:
- freerouter uses it from the start to pass packets to/from interfaces.
initially it was done by the 'socat', later did my faster alternatives, for example pcapInt.bin...
- as mentioned above, 'socat' linux utility already supports it
- dynamips uses it to pass packets to/from interfaces
- quite easy to have since encapped ethernet is in the udp payload without any additional header!
- and the most interesting part, qemu/kvm have well support for it for decades, we can say it's one
of the not too much protocols qemu/kvm can do natively, even fully in kernel.
and that latter makes it really interesting because you can point your qemu's virtual ethernet to our rare
router easily (-netdev socket,id=a1,udp=10.10.10.10:30003,localaddr=:10001 -device e1000,netdev=a1) and
that box can be a rare router's anycast lo1 which from now can use standard bridging features over the vm's
frames: apply acls, pass toward mpls and so on... the :30003 identified the bridge domain where the packets
will belong to and the hostip:10001 identifies the vm itself. freertr have server support for pckoudp and that
also gets propagated (via the same api messages) to hw so those vms can dynamically come in, so the network does
not need to be configured to accept a new vm... that means that vm migration between hosts is possible since
tunnels accepted automatically, mac learning happens over them as expected and so on...
and a fun fact, we still don't have real irb (just for local physical interfaces, which is translated by freertr
to normal routing api messages for the hw) but we can apply a given bridge to a hairpin's left side and apply
routing to the hairpin's right side so basically we can terminate them also, and all in hardware, in case of bfswd!!!
regards,
cs
