IIRC, i was contacted by someone who wanted to create a x86 ONIE based on
this:
https://github.com/opencomputeproject/onie/blob/master/machine/kvm_x86_64/INSTALL
I used it in the early days in order to install a ONIE and bootstrap ONL on
virtualbox.
I presume it can work if you manage to do this.
Otherwise, you can use freertr.org installation instruction:
Use ideally Debian Sid:
one-line installer to a fresh debian:
wget freertr.org/install.sh ; sudo bash install.sh
And then switch to software dataplane operation: (again in freertr.org
install instruction)
activate external forwarding:
write
test hwext path /rtr/rtr- dataplane p4emu
reload cold
(just press y)
After that you can switch to DPDK operation if the NIC used by your platform
is DPDK compatible.
Also, there is manual installation but this is only for your reference.
mc36 freertr.org/install.sh will mostly do everything for you.
I successfully installed DELL VEP1425, VEP1445 and my home router.
Please follow blog article for some reference in order to collect insight.
blog.freertr.org -> SOHO series of articles
You can start here:
http://y.freertr.org/JK7TC
For DPDK conversion, documentation needs to be updated.
In that case feel free to write one with our assistance and we will integrate
it in docs.freertr.org :)
We will then update the HCL here:

Have fun !
All the best,
Frederic
