Dear All

The eduGAIN Steering Committee has taken the decision to deprecate the GÉANT Code of Conduct version 1 (CoCo v1). This code is based on legislation that was replaced in 2018 and as such should no longer be used as a baseline for privacy compliance, and the uri for this entity category is no longer supported. As such, the committee believes it is now an appropriate time to deprecate CoCo v1 as a recommended profile.

The information held about CoCo v1 will be marked as deprecated from 1 January 2026 on the REFEDS wiki and on the (now archived) uri with a suggestion to migrate to the REFEDS Data Protection Code of Conduct v2 (CoCo v2).

CoCo v1 will be removed as a recommended best practice on the eduGAIN website: https://technical.edugain.org/documents. The eduGAIN Operational Team will also work to make changes to the CoCo monitor tool to reflect the deprecated status.

We recommend that Federation Operators take steps to remove support for CoCo v1 from entities published to eduGAIN and to consider support for the REFEDS Data Protection Code of Conduct v2 (CoCo v2) where appropriate or as a minimum to require the use of mdui:PrivacyStatementURL in metadata.

Note: CoCo v1 is owned and managed by eduGAIN. Ownership of CoCo v2 was moved to REFEDS so future decisions about the specification will fall under the management of REFEDS
