Thank you very much, Tomasz!

This is indeed very helpful. I’ll pass this back to our member.

Subject: Re: [[cat-users]] eduroam® ssid

This will go away, indeed this is misleading. ‘eduroam®’ is the Hotspot 2.0 profile ‘eduroam’ is the standard SSID profile. There is one more nasty thing about that. The installer claims it will install both profiles but if the network card does not support HS 2.0 the installation will fail silently, therefore we end up not installing what we have promised. Unfortunately there is no clear way to test the interface beforehand and this is why we assume that both files will get installed.

It all comes from the fact that Windows 10 and 11 cannot work with a single profile using it both for SSID and Hotspot 2.0.

For CAT 2.1 we plan to call the profiles ‘eduroam’ and ‘eduroam via Hotspot 2.0’, Notice ‘eduroam’ and not ‘eduroam®’ . The reason for this was that on Windows 10, if you listed the profiles with netsh wlan show profiles then the ‘eduroam®’  profile would be shown as ‘eduroamR’, however if you wanted to do anything with this profile you needed to provide it’s proper name i.e. ‘eduroam®’ . I found this rather misleading and decided to drop special characters in CT 2.1. However I just realised that on Windows 11 profile naming works just fine, so I have a dilemma, perhaps the special char does not do real harm, after all.

And while I am at it - it seemed that ’eduroam via Hotspot 2.0" looked like a good idea since Windows 10 uses the Hotspot 2.0 term, but on network listings this would look like "eduroam via Hotspot 2.0, Hospot 2.0". On Windows 11 the exactly same thing would be shown as "eduroam via Hotspot 2.0, Passpoint" :). This looks a bit silly, but what better solution.

And one thing more. If there is a network called "some network" which announces the eduroam Hotspot 2.0 OI and your device connects to it automatically, then your network listing will just show that you are connected to 'some network', not other information. As a user you might be surprised. Windows 11 isn't any better. They might realise when the same thing happens with OpenRoaming networks and people start asking.

Cheers

Tomasz

Hi all,

We’ve had exactly the same question today. I am assuming that eduroam® is for Hotspot 2.0 connections?

Hello all,

We just realized that the Windows 10 installer installs one profile for eduroam and another for eduroam®.

Bosses and colleagues ask me about it. :-!

I've searched this list archives but I can't find a conversation that talks about this.

I think it is done just to show that eduroam term is a registered trademark but doesn’t do anything significant in the configuration.

Is that so, or is there something else?

Thanks in advance and greetings
