Hello!

Wow, clearly a case of "lost in translation". Both me (as the author of that line) and Patrick come from German-speaking areas. I never thought as far as believing that there are different ways to handle the start of a letter. Indeed, the German rule is that if you greet someone with a comma and continue the sentence - you just continue a sentence, hence no reason/justification to capitalise the following word.

As grammar rules apparently differ in the English-speaking world, I've fixed the typo in the English source text for the next minor release (current master branch, 2.1 to be).

Of course, these sentences are all translatable, so the translator to German of this sentence (me!) needs to remember to change the capitalisation for the translated text.

Greetings,

Stefan

Hello Patrick,

I am afraid I have to agree with Tim.  The welcome e-mail is in the form of a letter and as such the convention is that after the ‘Dear X,’ introduction, the main body of the correspondence begins as a new paragraph with a capitalised word.

If you do a search for ‘format of a letter’ you’ll find numerous examples of the paragraph beginning with a word in capitals – even though the introduction has only ended in a comma. Beginning that paragraph with lowercase is, I am afraid, incorrect and looks strange.

Regards,

Ed

Hi Timothy

This is in my opinion no typo, as after the word Chicago is a comma and thus the sentence continues and isn’t a new one with the word “we”.

To whom it may concern,

Please see the typo in the welcome text. I don’t believe this is text that we are able to fix or customize as a CAT administrator.

Thanks,

FYI - There is small typo in the welcome message at https://cat.eduroam.org/?idp=775. The “w” in the sentence “we would like to warmly welcome you…” is not capitalized. This message is displayed after downloading the eduroam setup tool.
