From the FAQ:

My institution is not listed. Can't I just use any of the other ones?

    No! The installers contain security settings which are specific to
    the institution. If you are not from that institution, your computer
    will detect that you are about to send your username and credential
    to an unauthorised server and will abort the login. Using a
    different institution installer is guaranteed to not work!

That depends on the operating system, which your report did not divulge.

With that, your computer will send your username and password to any
rogue access point which claims to be eduroam, but isn't. These kinds of
attacks happen in every Wi-Fi network regularly. In essence, you should
consider your password compromised as soon as you connect without any
security settings.

No inconvenience at all. At least not on my side. A loss of password to
random third parties is much rather an inconvience to yourself.
