Thanks Dubravko,

It’s the same digital certificate it uses to work with all the other SAML1
SPs in the UK Federation so I doubt there’s anything wrong with it.

"should" because CAT SP is configured to support SAML1, but everyone
except your institution is using SAML2 these days so nobody complains
about SAML1.
But I don't think that error message “Key used to sign the message was
not an X509 certificate” is related to version of SAML. It has to be
related to digital signature that your IdP created.
